still learning ng

Posted by Cwiffie - March 9th, 2023

hi strange person reading this post.

Though I've lurked Newgrounds for many years now, I'm still learning much about the community after creating this account. I always loved NG's acceptance of many different artists and how the platform encourages collaboration on many levels. I joined in hopes that I might could share some of my work too.

Only problem is, my skills mostly pertain outside of drawn artwork or audio pieces. Rather unfortunately, they're very much anchored in the Roblox engine.

I don't draw, I model. But I've grown up with computer solid geometry (CSG) modeling within Roblox Studio, and have most of my work branching off from that skill. I now do animation and scripting, but still confined within the Roblox engine. Until I eventually learn and move into another software like Blender, most of the work I would share will still pertain to Roblox and its engine.

I barely see any actual Roblox creations posted on Newgrounds (and most I have seen are rather not-safe). So I feel out of place making an account then abruptly flooding the Artist Portal full of computer-modeled assets I've made, contrasting traditional hand-drawn assets that Newgrounds is known for. There are other places I could post this work, yes, but I opted not to do those. Twitter is the most well-known and used in the Roblox community to post your work, and I plan on making one in the future, but I personally want to stay away from much of the toxicity that Twitter also plays host to. DeviantArt is a little iffy on Roblox creations in similar vein to Newgrounds, but to my knowledge it doesn't offer informal blog posts like Newgrounds does. The only other alternative is to post work on nieche Discord servers focused around Roblox development, but in there my work only spreads so far. I came to Newgrounds as it's a platform I truly respect, and it hosts a very healthy community that I can connect and collaborate with. It seems much easier to find an artist or voice actor here and speak more eye-to-eye, compared to trying to shop around Fiverr for the right voice actor or composer for my projects.

I'll have to see how I can adjust to this place, if I should even be here at all. I've found other Roblox creators here posting Roblox GFX (the SFW kind), but there's so few that I don't know if they're an anomaly that flew under the rules, or if Roblox works are truly that sparse on this site.

oh well, one way to find out i guess.

whoa!! this is impressive for Roblox stuff! i like what i see :DD

i'm not sure as well if these sorta stuff is allowed on the Art portal though unfortunately. they seem to lean more on truly og works like you said yeah. maybe ask about it on the Art or Help forum on the Forums? a Moderator or someone else might help out there for you

either way, your works are pretty neat :3 if you can't post on the Art portal, i suggest making a personal Art thread on the Art forum, and share your works there! the rules for this art stuff aren't as strict over there i think

Thanks, haha. The characters I made 50/50, I made the tools and some retextures, but the clothing and other accessories were premade by others. The tanks I've made full-stop, though -- And there's plenty more in my portfolio, where that came from!

I'm looking forward to share more of my work on Newgrounds, but hopefully soon I'll find out if it's appropriate to post them all via the Artist Portal or not.

Who knows, maybe I'll post more of my work in blogs instead. So stay on guard for that ?
